Rabat – The Tunisian Minister of Local Affairs, Youssef Chahed, was selected to be the new Prime Minister of Tunisia. Chahed promises to fight against terrorism, corruption, and unemployment. At 40 years old, he is the youngest Prime Minister in Tunisian history.
“Today, we enter in the new step that requires effort, sacrifice, audacity, courage, abnegation and solutions outside the classic scope,” announced Chahed outside the palace after he was formally given the position.
The previous Prime Minister, Habib Essid, was voted out of office on Saturday in an almost unanimous decision by the parliament. Essid was criticized for his inability to pass economic reforms that would alleviate Tunisia’s unemployment crisis.
Chahed promises that the new government will have better representation of women and younger politicians.
“To win the battle against terrorism, to declare war against corruption and the corrupt, to augment the growth rate to create jobs, control the financial equilibrium as well as property and the environment,” will be the priorities of the new cabinet, as Chahed stated.
