Rabat – Rachida Dati, former French Minister of Justice who is of Algerian-Moroccan descent, has called upon France to “strengthen ties” with Morocco, which she sees as her country’s best ally in the fight against terrorism.
In an announcement published Monday on the site LesEchos.fr, Dati stated that Morocco can serve to change the image of Islam in the public eye. “It is more necessary than ever to highlight the experiences that can serve as an antidote to a perverted [version of] Islam,” she said.
Dati praised Morocco for its successes, as well as the benefits it has given to its citizens by enabling them to “control their destiny, to access knowledge and culture, and to participate effectively in the fight against discrimination of any kind.”
Dati hopes that, using Morocco as a positive example of Islamic government and society, Morocco and France can form a stronger political bond in the fight against terrorism.
France has been the target of several terroristm attacks in the past few years, including the murder of a Catholic priest, the truck attack in Nice, shootings in Paris last November, and the shooting at Charlie Hebdo in January of 2015.
