According to the same source, the attacker shot another person in the chest before he fled the scene on foot.
The fatal incident happened at 1.55 pm eastern time, just a block away from Al-Furqan Jame Masjid Mosque in Ozone Park, in Queens.
One of the two people shot was killed, while the second person was critically injured. It is unclear whether the person killed is the Imam or the person shot in the chest.
Police arrived immediately in the scene after it received a phone call about shots being fired.
Before the opening of an investigation into the crime, the police were quick to state that the attack “was not” a hate crime.
As of the time of writing, the murderer is still on the run.
