London – Fifty Moroccan and sub-Saharan African migrants were rescued earlier this week off the Spanish coast when their boats ran adrift as they were attempting to cross the Mediterranean sea from northern Morocco to Almeira in southern Spain.
The 40 men and 10 women were picked up and transferred to medical facilities in Spain by the national maritime rescue service who had spotted the two vessels distressed in high winds.
A woman was treated for burns but, according to a statement released by the service,
all of the other passengers were found to be in good health despite their ordeal.
According to the Geneva-based International Organization for Migration, which works to help ensure the orderly and humane management of international migration,
3,845 migrants fled to Spain across the sea last year, out of a total 956,000 who reached Europe by the same method.
