Rabat – Moroccan authorities foiled a drug smuggling operation and seized 1.988 ton of cannabis, the Central Bureau for Judiciary Investigations (BCIJ) announced Tuesday.
The network’s mastermind and four suspects with criminal records were arrested, the source added in a statement.
The drug was loaded into a warehouse in Douar Laouamra near the northern city of Larache, BCIJ said, adding the banned substance was concealed within 1,010 wooden crates aboard an international transport truck that was seized on a highway near Berrechid.
The search of Douar Laouamra’s warehouse led to the seizure of 125 cannabis resin platelets, two trucks, two cars, a motorcycle and two trailers, as well as equipment used in trafficking operations.
According to preliminary investigations, this criminal network was planning several drug trafficking operations to Europe through freight trucks.
Investigations are underway to identify the other people involved in the drug trafficking network, the source added.
