New York (UN) – King Mohammed VI, who is the bearer of the torch of peace and development in Africa, is continuously undertaking initiatives and paying visits to the continent with the aim of fostering the ties of brotherhood, cooperation and solidarity between African peoples, said, on Friday in New York, foreign minister Salaheddine Mezouar before the 71st UNGA.
“The Kingdom put the African continent at the heart of its foreign policy and will continue supporting all efforts meant to create and promote development in Africa. Based on a future-oriented, insightful vision drawing on an in-depth knowledge of the continent’s problems, King Mohammed VI, who is the bearer of the torch of peace and development in Africa, is continuously undertaking initiatives and paying visits to the continent with the aim of fostering the ties of brotherhood, cooperation and solidarity between African peoples,” Mezouar said.
The Minister recalled that the King has, in his latest speech dated Aug. 20, 2016, on the 63rd anniversary of the Revolution of the King and the People, affirmed the close ties between Morocco and Africa, by stating that: “For us, Africa is not about goals and objectives; dealing with Africa involves a commitment towards the African citizen, wherever he or she may be (..) I believe what is good for Morocco is good for Africa – and vice versa. Theirs is one and the same destiny. I also believe there can be no progress without stability: either the two go together, or they do not exist.”
For Morocco, Africa is more than a geographical belonging or historical relations. It is about sincere feelings of affection and esteem, human and spiritual bonds, and fruitful, concrete and solidarity-based relations of cooperation. It is the natural and strategic extension of Morocco, he said.
Morocco’s decision to return to the African Union is the materialization of this real commitment towards Africa to move forward and defend the interests of its peoples, he underlined, thanking all African states which have requested the return of Morocco to the AU.
The minister recalled that HM the King is always calling for setting up a new Maghreb order that would be active regionally and internationally, and would ensure security and stability in the region on the basis of respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of member states.
