Casablanca – The Secretary General of Justice and Development Party, Abdelilah Benkirane, said he is not worried about forming the next government and reaffirmed that PJD would not consider a coalition with the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM).
In an interview with Aljazeera.net, Benkirane ruled out the prospect of facing trouble in forming the next government, noting that the process will be easier than in 2011.
“There is no certainty in politics, but I believe that the party will not face any problems in forming a government, and most likely the situation will be less difficult than previously,” said Benkirane.
Speaking about the options for his party in forming a coalition with the other front runners in the legislative election results officially announced on October 8, Benkirane reaffirmed that the PJD is considering the possibility of a coalition with all the parties except for the Authenticity and Modernity Party, which came second in the election with 102 seats.
With respect to the low voter turnout in Friday’s parliamentary elections, which stood at around 43 percent, Benkirane said that he finds it “satisfactory” and that it should not be compared with the 45-percent rate during the 2011 legislative elections because the number of registered voters in this election increased to 16 million from 12 million in 2011.
Benkirane also rejected the observation that “poor government performance” is behind the low voter turnout. In the interview, he asserted that that was a reason to vote against the PJD, not to boycott the vote.
“The people who are dissatisfied with the government’s performance and the outcome of its efforts could have gone to the polls to punish the government and vote against it.”
