Rabat – Salaheddine Mezouar, Secretary General of the National Rally of Independent (RNI), has submitted his resignation from the presidency of the party, according to Moroccan news website Telquel.
According to the same source, the outgoing Minister of Foreign Affairs who is also President of COP22, justified his decision by his inability to “handle the new negotiation stage in addition to his other responsibilities, including those related to the COP22,” which is scheduled to take place in Marrakech next month.
The decision comes two days after the parliamentary elections held on Friday October 7, in which the RNI obtained 37 seats in parliament, down from 52 in the 2011 legislative elections.
If confirmed, Mezouar will be regarded as one of the few Moroccan political leaders who resigned after their parties failed to score well in a major election.
Mezouar was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in October 2013, following a reshuffle of the government.
