Rabat – King Mohammed VI is set to receive Abdelilah Benkirane, outgoing head of the government and head of the Party of Justice and Development (PJD) at the Royal palace in Casablanca, according to Moroccan news outlets Le360.
The meeting will be held three days after the parliamentary elections held on Friday October. During the second legislative held after the adoption of a new constitution in 2011, the PJD secured 125 seats, ahead of its political rival, the Party of Authenticity and Modernity, which obtained 102 seats.
In accordance with the provisions of the 2011 constitutions, King Mohammed VI appoints the leader of the party that won the elections to form a government.
This will be the second time in a row that Adelilah Benkirane will be entrusted by the Moroccan monarch with the mission of forming a coalition government.
Because of the balkanization of Morocco’s political landscape with the existence of many parties in the parliament, it is almost impossible for any party to secure an absolute majority that would enable to form a government.
The PJD will need to secure 198 seats out of the 395 seats in the parliament in order to form a coalition government.
