Casablanca – A Moroccan policeman was arrested on Wednesday the 26th after being caught engaging in corruption, threatening to shut down a Corniche bar if the owner didn’t pay up.
Moroccan publication Assabah reported that authorities arrested the police officer after the owner of a bar in Ain Diab pressed charges against the man for corruption.
The officer allegedly threatened the bar owner, saying he’d shut down her business if she didn’t pay him the requested amount. He insisted on getting regular sums of money paid to him in cash, and the owner would oblige, for fear of having her business shut down.
Seeing the demands of the policeman increasing in frequency, the owner finally pressed charges against the officer with the crown prosecutor. In response, authorities tapped into the bar owner’s phone and caught the police offer in the act.
Though the PJD Moroccan government has pledged to combat corruption, corruption remains a big socio-political challenge faced by the nation. The latest Corruption Perceptions Index reported that Morocco lost eight ranks from 2014 to 2015, going from 80th to 88th place out of 168 countries.
