Casablanca – Morocco’s appointed Head of Government, Abdelilah Benkirane, gave reasons for his call on his party members not to respond to the demonstrations following Mouhcine Fikri’s tragedy in the city of Hoceima.
Since he requested his party “members and sympathizers not to react” to the protests denouncing the incident in Hoceima city, Benkirane has been severely attacked by politicians, human right activists and Moroccan social media users.
During a speech he delivered in front of the members of Justice and Development Party’s (PJD) National Committee on November 5, Benkirane explained that he was afraid of a potential shift of the protests in Morocco.
According to the Arabic-language news source, the PJD’s Secretary-General stated that Fikri’s death was “very painful and moving” but should not be a reason “to shift from a loss to losses.”
Benkirane said that his decision was “important and consistent,” adding that the caretaker government did not “prevent anyone from protesting in all the cities that saw marches denouncing the incident, and that no interventions to prevent it or crush it were recorded.”
