Casablanca — COP22 President and Morocco’s Foreign Minister, Salaheddine Mezouar explained the presence of Israel at the international UN climate change conference at a press conference this Tuesday, November 8.
The presence of the Israeli flag on the COP22 site had angered many onlookers, especially the National Action Group For the Support of Palestine.
When asked about the matter at a press conference held today, Mezouar said that “We are in the context of a United Nations conference. It’s a multilateral meeting that reunites all parties. All United Nations meetings across the world welcome all nations.”
He also reminded the public that the conference was about fighting climate change, adding that, “The combat against climate change is a global one. It concerns all of humanity and necessitates everyone’s participation.”
In terms of Palestine, Mezouar said that, “Palestine is also present at the conference and Morocco has defended its entry in the United Nations. Morocco is the first defender of the Palestinian cause. I think that Morocco has lessons to learn from no one when it comes to the unacceptable position taken by Israel [in regards to this issue].”
Mezouar ended his commentary on the matter by reiterating what the conference is really about: rallying every nation together against climate change.
