The film joins a slew of other American productions in its enjoyment of Morocco as a filming site.
Due to the ongoing unrest in many Middle Eastern and North African countries, Morocco’s political stability and welcoming demeanor has been attractive to foreign filmmakers.
In fact, earlier this month, CNN published an article calling Morocco Africa’s Little Hollywood. Ouarzazate, nicknamed “the door to the desert,” was praised for producing a number of renowned movies and television shows. A few of these include Nicholas Cage’s “Army of One,” “American Sniper,” and TV shows like “Game of Thrones” and “Homeland.”
“Tangerine,” which is set in 1950s Morocco, is a psychological thriller featuring Johansson as the lead character and produced by George Clooney.
The plot, says Bustle Magazine, is based on Christine Mangan’s debut novel, which follows the story of Alice (Scarlett Johannson) whose fiancé is mysteriously found dead. “After his death,” adds Bustle, “Alice decides to leave everything behind including her roommate, Lucy. But when Lucy comes back into Alice’s life years later, Alice’s husband goes missing sparking a mystery that leads Alice to wonder if Lucy is the common link in both cases.”
The psychological women’s thriller genre is one that hasn’t been explored at length by Hollywood. Films like “Gone Girl” and “The Girl on the Train” are the rare few. “Tangerine” will thus be an important addition to the genre.
