Rabat – “Salafists, get out of the country.” These inflammatory words are just some of the Islamophobic content found scrawled on the wall of a Mosque in the city of Bordeaux in southwestern France.
According to Arabic-language news source, Hespress, an unidentified person wrote a hate-filled content on the wall of a mosque in Merignac district in Bordeaux.
The Islamic Union for the district released a statement denouncing the act and urging local authorities to investigate the incident. French police have responded to the call and begun an investigation which will hopefully lead to the arrest the perpetrator. The statement further revealed that CCTV footage of the area identified the features of the suspected attacker.
Recent incidents of hate crimes in France are on a sharp rise, outnumbered only by those in the US following the election of Donald Trump. In fact, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a non-profit organization that fights hate and intolerance in the US, has recorded 700 cases of intimidation and harassment against minorities, including the Muslims of the US.
Recently a white nationalist assaulted a Moroccan expatriate in New York last week, merely because he looked Arab, while Islamic Centers and a mosque in California have received photocopies of handwritten letters attacking Muslims and promising ethnic cleansing.
