Rabat – The Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) was awarded the prestigious “Champions of the Earth” award by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), in the category “Entrepreneurial Vision.”
The said award recognizes outstanding environmental leaders, whether that be individuals or organizations, that have exemplified inspiration, vision, innovation, leadership and action for the environment. This international award was established by UNEP in 2004.
The award recognizes the organization’s leadership in advancing solar power, making solar energy affordable and demonstrating the utility of innovative approaches to green financing, UNEP said in a statement.
“Masen’s achievements come at a time when bold, ambitious and innovative action to achieve sustainable renewable energy is more urgent than it has ever been,” the statement added.
But the road to success was not an easy one for Masen. “The company has overcome significant financing challenges to bring affordable solar energy to Morocco,” said the statement quoting UNEP Executive Director Erik Solheim.
“Masen’s success is an inspiration and a model for enterprises everywhere. They have shown that conversion to affordable renewable energy is not only possible, but beneficial for reducing overall energy costs for a country and its communities,” the UNEP statement added.
