Casablanca — The Royal Moroccan Federation of Soccer (FRMF) has allegedly been attempting to get FC Valencia soccer player Munir El Haddadi, of Moroccan origin, to play for the national team.
According to Al Massae’s December 8 issue, the FRMF is relying on several arguments in favor of El Haddadi joining the national team. As the player is both Spanish and Moroccan citizen, FIFA regulation could make the player eligible to play for Morocco as he is not over the age of 23 and because the Spanish and Moroccan national teams are not part of the same confederation. Moreover, the fact that he didn’t play for Spain’s national team during the last Euro cup is a definite bonus.
In 2014, many thought El Haddadi would never join the Lions since he played for 15 minutes in a Spain vs. Macedonia game leading up to Euro 2016, but it seems as though this will likely not be an obstacle.
That same year, Munir told BeIN Sports: “I do not close the door on anyone, if I am asked to play for Morocco’s national team in the future, I would do it, no problem.”
Sources cited by the Moroccan daily also said that El Haddadi have reportedly agreed to play for the Atlas Lions, though no official word has been given on whether or not the switch will definitely take place.
