Rabat – A song from Moroccan singer, Saad Lamjarrad, currently under arrest in France, has received the highest number of views on YouTube in the Arab world this year.
Lamjarrad, detained in France following an accusation of sexual assault last October, scored a 2016 hit with his very successful song, “Mashi Sahel.”
Arabic-speaking news source, Le360, reported that Lamjarrad’s song has caused Arabic music to ‘refresh’ in an unprecedented way. The song attracted 100 million views within only one month of its release. The lyrics of the song are by Samir Elmjari and distributed by Mohammed Chraibi, who also composed the music.
Another Moroccan ranked second in terms of the number of viewers with his song “Tsunami,” also written by Samir Elmjari. The song dearned 68 million views and was composed by Aziz Mahfoud and RedOne.
According to Le360, Rajaa and Omar Belmir came 6th in the rankings with their song “Mal Zin,” which scored nearly 49 million viewers. The final Moroccan in the top ten for 2016 is the song “Echayeb,” performed by the band Fnaire, taking 8th position. Altogether, Moroccans can be very proud of having secured 4 positions in the Arab world’s top ten songs for 2016.
