Rabat – Moroccan fans are decrying the decision of the coach of the Moroccan national football team, Hervé Renard’s, to exclude AFC Ajax’s star, Hakim Ziyech from participating in the African Cup of Nations.
The decision not to include the Moroccan football star, who plays for the Dutch team Ajax Amsterdam, has come as a shock to Moroccans, especially after being awarded best player in Holland this year.
When Renard announced the list of the 26 official players who will go United Arab Emirates to participate in the last camp before the start of the African Cup of Nations (CAN) in Gabon on January 14, 2017, however, the list did not include the name of Hakim Ziyech.
Moroccan social media users are collectively denouncing this decision, finding it inconceivable that he was not summoned while other, far less competent, were. Social media users are expressing their disappointment that French second division players and Moroccan profession soccer league players will represent Morocco in the international event.
Ziyech was expected to shine this season and lead the Moroccan national team. After Renard confirmed that he will not be included,a show of mass disappointment erupted on Moroccan social media. Moroccans are also criticizing the fact that the list includes Hamza Mendil, who still has not played any official match with his French Team, Lille OSC.
