Rabat – Secretary General of the Istiqlal Party (IP) Hamid Chabat,on Saturday announced his decision to support Abdelilah Benkirane’s government even if the IP is excluded from it.
During the IP’s National Council meeting, which is currently being held in Rabat, Chabat stated that “we noticed the positive approach of Head of Government Abdelilah Benkirane in trying to have us participate in the government, but we are surprised by the prejudice of the other parties against our party. […] we were expecting to provide serious justifications, but they suddenly said that Chabat is a barrier [to forming a new government].”
“I would like to remind you that when we were in the opposition,” Chabat continued, “we told our colleagues in the Justice and Development Party (PJD) that the IP’s biggest concern is not to secure seats in [the parliament] but to be a decision-maker, because we have visions for and commitments to the Moroccan people.”
“The IP chose to join the government coalition, but if we did not manage to be in it, we will support the government and its leader Benkirane, who should bear in mind that we will always be by his side,” Chabat added.
Following his latest controversial statement against Mauritania, Aziz Akhannouch, Secretary General of the National Rally of Independents Party (RNI) and Mohand Laenser, Popular Movement (MP) Secretary-General, asserted that they would not join a coalition government that includes Chabbat.
The IP’s participation in the government is still one of the main stumbling blocks that have delayed the formation of the coalition government and led to what has become known in Morocco as the “governmental blockage.”
