Casablanca — U.S. Ambassador Dwight L. Bush Sr. has announced he will be leaving Morocco, sending a message of farewell and gratitude to the country.
In a video posted Saturday on the Rabat US Embassy’s Facebook page, Ambassador Bush announced his departure, saying “It with regret that I must announce that I will be leaving Morocco in January as the Obama administration comes to a close. Morocco will continue to hold a special place in my heart.”
“Nearly three years ago,” Bush says, “I arrived as the American Ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco. My relationship with Morocco dates back 25 years and it has grown steadily since that time.”
Bush’s three years in Morocco were no coincidence. In his statement, the ambassador explains how he specifically requested to be sent to Morocco, after learning he would be appointed Ambassador, knowing the country’s rich history and culture.
“I was familiar with our longstanding bilateral relationship,” Bush continues.”I wanted to strengthen the bonds between our countries.”
Bush’s statement is accompanied with a montage of pictures from the Ambassador’s time here, displaying the variety of work his time in Morocco has culminated in. “I have truly enjoyed living in Rabat, traveling around this country, meeting so many Moroccans doing incredible things,” Bush says. “Without a doubt, these three years have been some of the most rewarding years of my life.”
“However, I depart with confidence, knowing that my team at Mission Morocco and colleagues at Washington will continue the work of diplomacy, development and promoting intercultural understanding,” he adds.
He ends the message with a statement of gratitude to Morocco, saying “I want to say thank you to the people of Morocco. Thank you for opening your hearts to me. Thank you for opening your homes to me. Thank you for allowing me to enjoy your rich culture and history.”
Bush has been Morocco’s U.S. Ambassador since March 21, 2014.
