Toronto – In a blizzard of tweets Saturday morning, Trump accused Barack Obama of wire tapping his Trump Tower phones before the election, according to CNN.
In just the latest of what is turning out to be an increasingly less civil banter for US President Donald Trump regarding Obama, he is once again firing unfounded accusations at his predecessor and offering no evidentiary proof. In a series of four tweets, Trump let loose his outrage, real or imagined, questioning the legality of a sitting president to issue an order to wire tap a contender in a presidential election.
First came the initial accusatory tweet; “Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my ‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism.”
This was quickly followed with another tweet; “Is it legal for a sitting president to be ‘wire tapping’ a race for President prior to an election? Turned down by court earlier. A NEW LOW!”
Offering not even a hint as to proof or a source for the claim, Trump launched a third tweet aimed squarely at Obama; “I bet a good lawyer could make a great case out of the fact that President Obama was tapping my phones in October, just prior to the election!”
His fourth and final tweet was the most personal attack yet; “How low has President Obama gone to tap my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!”
According to the same report, when approached about the latest allegations, a former senior US official said “This did not happen. It is false. Wrong.”
Former President Obama chose to respond through his spokesman, Kevin Lewis. “Neither the President nor any White House official ever ordered surveillance on any US citizen,” said Lewis, calling the claims “simply false.”
