Rabat – The ousted Head of Government Abdelilah Benkirane has refused to speak about his dismissal by King Mohammed VI, telling reporters, “There are no comments about King Mohammed VI’s decision.”
“Talks are over,” Benkirane said, repeating his famous catchphrase.
Ahead of the meeting of the Justice and Development Party’s (PJD) General Secretariat, Benkirane refused to make any comment about King Mohammed VI’s decision to relieve him from his duties as appointed Head of Government following five months of deadlock and futile negotiations with other party leaders.
The PJD members held a meeting on Thursday to discuss the King’s decision to dismiss Abdelilah Benkirane and appoint another PJD member as his replacement.
Abdelilah Benkirane was reportedly received by the King on Wednesday to inform the PJD leader of his decision to appoint another member of the PJD to head the government.
The King dismissed Benkirane 48 hours after his return from five-week-long African tour, according to a communique issued by the Royal Cabinet on Wednesday.
Two days after the legislative elections held on October 7, 2016, King Mohammed appointed Abdelilah Benkirane as Head of Government and entrusted him with forming a new coalition government.
But after over five months of deadlocked negotiations with different political parties, he was unable to form a coalition.
Following his dismissal, Benkirane has urged the PJD members to avoid making any comments or statements regarding King Mohammed VI’s decision.
