After the ceremony ended, Mounssif and her friend wanted to attend one of the meetings in the Chamber of Deputies but she was barred from entering, because of her Moroccan origin.
Although the public in Italy is allowed to enter the Chamber they must fill out an identification form. The security guard on duty denied Mounssif entry because she had a Moroccan Passport. This prompted her to resort to the media and her story received immense public attention in Italy.
Parliamentary Speaker, Laura Bolderana, declared that denying entry to the 22-year-old Moroccan student was an “unbearable mistake” and “unacceptable.” She agreed to receive Mounssif in the Chamber on Sunday, amid a warm show of applause form the deputies.
Upon receiving Ilham Mounssif Bolderana used the opportunity to request the approval of a law making it possible to grant citizenship to the children of immigrants in Italy.
