Rabat – Amid the growing uproar and tension among the Istiqlal Party (IP), the Saturday meeting of the party ended up with a brawl between the supporters of the Secretary General, Hamid Chabat and Hamdi Ould Rachid, one of the leading members of the party.
Footages and pictures have emerged from the area showing the fight between the two groups resulted in vandalism, tables and chairs being turned upside down and property damage to the party’s headquarters.
Supporters of the two groups ruined the meeting. Orgnizations affiliated with the party had been invited to express their support to Chabat, including professionals, Istaqlalian Women and Youth.
After the meeting, each group blamed the other for starting it and each claimed the other was responsible for the vandalism.
Who Is Responsible?
The party published a communique on its official website, saying that it “denounces the actions [that were carried out by] a criminal gang consisted of individuals resorted to the headquarters of the party carrying weapons, causing serious injuries among the militants of the party.”
The communique also says that Chabat is taking responsibility to put an end to the actions of this gang, claiming that the gang was instructed by [people] from the outside of the headquarters, adding that “the [perpetrators] introduced themselves from the city of Laayoune, understanding that they belong to Hamdi Ould Rachid.
14 out of the 26 party members are accusing Chabat of making “individual decisions” and have stepped up their campaign to push him into resigning. For this reason, Chabat made the decision to shut down the party’s headquarters and seize its keys.
