Rabat - The United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres said in his latest report on the Sahara, distributed Monday to members of the UN Security Council, his intention to relaunch the process of negotiations based on realism and compromise with a new momentum and spirit to achieve a mutually acceptable political solution to the Sahara issue in accordance with Security Council resolutions.
Rabat – The United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres said in his latest report on the Sahara, distributed Monday to members of the UN Security Council, his intention to relaunch the process of negotiations based on realism and compromise with a new momentum and spirit to achieve a mutually acceptable political solution to the Sahara issue in accordance with Security Council resolutions.
Guterres recommended the extension of the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) by 12 months, until April 30, 2018.
Entitled “The Situation Concerning Western Sahara,” the annual report referred to Morocco’s decision to authorize the return of 17 civil officials from MINURSO and its cooperation with the United Nations to bring this issue finally to an end.
Guterres also in the report on the need to rekindle the deadlocked political process and bring the parties back to the negotiation table, as well as on the situation in the Guerguerat, stressing that no party has been willing to resume direct negotiations without preconditions to reach a mutually acceptable political solution in line with Resolution 1754 (2007), each of them insists that its proposal is the sole basis for negotiations.
“Each party has a different vision and reading of the history and documents that surround this conflict,” he said.
Guterres, who was elected UN Secretary General last October, commended Morocco’s decision to withdraw from the Guerguerat region and call on the Security Council to urge the Polisario to withdraw from the region.
