Rabat – The 3rd Session of the Executive Committee of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the Arab Forum on Sustainable Development 2017 will be held in Rabat May 3 to 7, announced the ESCWA.
“The Arab Forum on Sustainable Development, to be held on May 3-5, is an important rendez-vous that serves as a regional platform for discussing the coherent and coordinated follow-up and implementation of the 2030 Agenda For sustainable development at the level of the Arab region,” ESCWA said in a statement published on its website.
The Forum will review the status of the regional agenda after the beginning of its implementation two years ago and will provide an opportunity to present national experiences, including complementarity and harmonization of the countries policies with the new strategy, progress made, involvement of the various stakeholders, and the means of implementation.
Participants will also discuss “the fight against poverty and the strengthening of prosperity in a changing Arab region,” through a series of round tables that will address this issue from the point of view of equality, justice, economic growth and decent employment as main factors in the fight against poverty and the realization of prosperity. They will also discuss “how to implement the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and the capacity of the region to mobilize regional means for its implementation.”
In addition, the ESCWA Executive Committee will discuss the follow-up to the Doha Declaration on the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the recommendations of the 29th ESCWA Ministerial Session (December 2016) and the implementation of the recommendations made by the Executive Committee at its second meeting, stated the UN Commission announced in a separate communiqué.
The Committee will also consider regional and international issues relevant to the Arab region, in particular the results of the United Nations Conference on Housing and Urban Development and COP22 held in Marrakesh last November.
During this third session, the Committee will also examine the report on the implementation of the ESCWA plan of action for development financing, the digital future of the Arab world, and the 2018-2019 action plan.
