Rabat – The High Commission for Planning (HCP) of Morocco was elected co-chair of the Forum of Euro-Mediterranean Statisticians (EU-MED Forum). This is part of the framework of Euro-Mediterranean statistical cooperation.
Established in 2013, the Forum of Euro-Mediterranean Statisticians is a high-level decision-making body in charge of the orientation, evaluation and validation of the activity programs of the seven regional working groups covering the sectors of employment, migration, transport, energy, business statistical directory, foreign trade and quality in addition to cross-cutting activities.
The EU-MED Forum is the culmination of a succession of Euro-Mediterranean projects in the field of statistical cooperation, known as MEDSTAT, with a particular focus on strengthening the statistical compliance process in the region with international standards, the sharing of good practices and the development of the technical capacities of the NSIs.
The election of the HCP, which took place at the 6th meeting of the EU-MED Forum held on May 16-17 2017 in Malta, indicates the active role that Morocco has played in the development of the Euro- Mediterranean region. It also confirms the position of the Moroccan statistical system both on the regional and international levels.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the European Commission (Eurostat and DG Near), the Directors-General of the National Statistical Institutes (NSIs) in nine southern Mediterranean countries and representatives of NSIs from European countries.
The HCP of Morocco succeeds the National Institute of Statistics of Lebanon, and the election follows the presidency of the HCP of three sectoral working groups out of seven in the framework of Euro-Mediterranean statistical cooperation.
