In a communiqué issued on Tuesday, the government cabinet called the news “false” and “lacking credibility and ethics.”
The story had been published by the daily newspaper Assabah and reported by several online media outlets.
According to the reports, a man in his twenties tried to set himself on fire in front of El Othmani’s house in Salé.
The paper said the man in question lives in a slum, claiming that he was “stripped” of his horse-drawn cart by city authorities and given a tricycle instead.Then, said the reports, security and intelligence officers rushed to the scene and placed the man under custody.
Following this, the police received information that the youth’s family was going to try breaking through security barricades around El Othmani’s house and beg for their son’s release.
