Rabat – Abdellatif Zaïm, a Moroccan member of the parliament affiliated to Modernity and Authenticity Party (PAM) in Rhamna (70 km from Marrakech), attempted to set himself on fire on Thursday.
The MP’s attempt to immolate himself was reported by media to be tied to his previous protests against the annexation of his land for the “Green City” of Ben Guerir project.
Zaïm has been injured and his health status is stable. He is currently hospitalized in a private clinic in Marrakech, said a Maghreb Arabe Presse spokesperson.
The PAM issued a communiqué Friday expressed its “sorrow” over the incident, saying that it has assigned a committee to investigate in the case.
The party added that a group of its Political Bureau members have traveled to Marrakech to check into his Zaïm’s status.
