Rabat – The Mediouna forest in western Tangier was the site of a widespread fire on Friday and Saturday, causing huge damage to the area.
Local fire fighting units kept trying to extinguish the blaze until late into the night. As of Sunday, no details have been provided yet on the situation.
The High Commission on Water, Forest and Combating Desertification said the burned area extends over 10 hectares.
The blaze started on Friday evening but was contained by local fire fighting units.
As the wind picked up on Saturday morning, however, the fire reignited.
This time, despite attempts to extinguish the flames on the ground and from the air by deploying water-bomber aircraft, the fire could not be contained.
Spain offered assistance in the fire extinguishing efforts by sending an additional water-bomber.
The cause of this fire has not yet been identified.
A report by the High Commission on Water, Forest and Combating Desertification last year, revealed that, by August of 2016, 270 fires had damaged or destroyed 1739 hectares of forests in the kingdom.
