Rabat – Members of the defense team of Nasser Zafzafi, leading activist in Hirak (protest movement in the Rif region), have stated their client defended Morocco’s territorial integrity when he appeared before the investigation judge in Casablanca on Monday.
Zafzafi, who is represented by 25 lawyers, is accused of heavy charges such as threatening the territorial integrity of the kingdom by advocating for separatism and undermining state security. He is being prosecuted along dozens of other protesters currently under preventive detention.
He responded to those charges on Monday by completely denying them, his lawyers asserted.
In an interview with Telquel, Zafzafi’s lawyer, Said Benhammani, said,“He explained to the judge that the accusation of separatism and undermining the security of the state are unfounded. He drew attention to the peaceful nature of the protests and also to the fact that the demands of demonstrators are legitimate.”
The lawyers asserted that their client was in a good “physical” condition and seemed “determined,” saying he was at ease while answering questions from the judge.
Benhammani added that Zafzafi told the judge he remains attached to the territorial integrity of Morocco and to the monarchy.
“Those officials who are responsible for the delay of the development projects in the region are the ones who should be in my place,”Zafzafi told the judge.
Nabil Ahemjik and SilyaZiani, two other leading members of Hirak, are due to appear before the investigating judge on Wednesday.
