Rabat – Two Moroccan butchers were sentenced to between three to four months in prison terms in Essaouira for selling meat products unfit for human consumption, reports Moroccan daily newspaper Al Akhbar.
The newspaper said in its weekend edition that the suspects were apprehended following a complaint filed by a person residing in Skala district. The butchers are brothers, added the source.
The defendants appeared before the city’s court on Wednesday. The eldest brother was sentenced to four months in jail, while his younger sibling was sentenced to three months.
Al Akhbar added that local associations had urged the authorities to control quality of meats products intended for sale in the region.
Earlier this month, The National Office for the Sanitary Security of Food Products
(ONSSA) affirmed that a set of mandatory actions were undertaken in order to prevent meat distributors and slaughterhouses from receiving cows and calves that do not have ear tags showing their health statuses.
The ONSSA warned butcher shops and slaughterhouses that strict penalties will be imposed on people if they did not comply with the given instructions, which form part of the implemented initiatives to fight crimes against the safety of public health across the kingdom.
