Rabat – Casa Transport signed on Friday a long-term contract with the French state-owned RATP DEV, the world’s largest operator of urban transport, which will take over operation and maintenance of Casablanca’s tramway network for the 2017-2029 term.
The new contract was signed by Youssef Draiss, Director General of Casa Transport, and Laurence Battle, Chairwoman of the Executive Committee of RATP DEV, according to Maghreb Arab Press (MAP).
The total cost of the deal amounts to MAD 4.38 billion. RATP DEV was among other bidders which compete over the operation of Casablanca’s tramway network, including Transdev and National Express – Alsa – ONCF.
In 2016, the Casa Transport launched an international call for tenders regarding the operation and maintenance of Casablanca’s tramway network and buses with high level of service (BHNS) for the period of 2017-2029.
The contract is considered the most ambitious project in urban transport made in the African continent.
In 2022, the overall transport network in Casablanca will consist of 76 kilometers of tramway track and 22 kilometers of BHNS lines. The future tramway lines will be put into place according to precise schedules, reported MAP.
