Tunis Afrique reported the death of at least 70 irregular migrants off the Sfax coast, while local fishermen saved sixteen others.
Rabat – Tunisian state-run news agency Tunis Afrique Presse reported the drowning of irregular immigrants, Friday, May 10, off the shore of the Sfax cities, 270 km southeast of Tunis.
The group was on board a boat that sank while seeking to reach Europe. The boat is believed to have put out to seae off the shores of the north-western Libyan city of Zwara.
According to a UN migration official, the number of deaths is estimated between 60 and 70. Local fishermen nearby the site of the incident managed to save of sixteen others.
The same sources added that coast guard units are still scouring the Sfax waters to retrieve the bodies of the drowned migrants.
