Rabat – The Governor of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, Mohamed Mhidia, inaugurated the largest tennis court in Morocco, located in Tangier’s Sports City, on Wednesday, December 25.
King Mohammed VI launched the stadium’s construction works back in 2014, alongside other sporting facilities that make up Tangier’s Sports City, in the Ziaten neighborhood, western Tangiers.
The construction of the new stadium cost MAD 600 million of the region’s budget.
The 74-hectares-large stadium includes a main court, with a maximum capacity of 3,000 spectators, along with 17 secondary courts, a conference room, a meeting room, changing rooms for players and referees, and an infirmary.
The stadium also boasts several commercial and entertainment facilities.
The stadium is set to start hosting the Hassan II Trophy, an international tennis competition in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) 250 points category.
The tournament was launched in 1990 as an annual competition played on the courts of Al Amal tennis complex in Casablanca. In 2017, the competition moved to Marrakech’s royal tennis club, and starting 2020, it will be played in Tangier.
The competition takes place in April of every year and offers more than $500,000 in cash prize.
