Rabat – In 24 hours, the Ministry of Health in Morocco has confirmed 190 new cases of COVID-19, along with 30 recoveries and three deaths.
As of 6 p.m. on April 24, Morocco’s total COVID-19 cases stand at 3,758, including 468 recoveries and 158 deaths.
Daily monitoring of people in COVID-19 hotspots is currently the most effective method of detecting new coronavirus cases. In the past 24 hours, 163 of the new cases, or 85%, were recorded in previously-detected hotspots.
The COVID-19 hotspots include industrial and commercial sites throughout the country, as well as a prison in Ouarzazate, southern Morocco.
Casablanca-Settat remains the region with the highest COVID-19 case count in Morocco, with 27% of total cases in the country, followed by Marrakech-Safi (22%), Fez-Meknes (13%), Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima (13%), and Draa-Tafilalet (10%).
Morocco’s remaining regions continue to show a slow increase in numbers, except the three southern regions of Guelmim-Oued Noun, Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra, and Dakhla-Oued Ed Dahab, where the combined COVID-19 case count does not exceed 10.
Since the start of the outbreak on March 2, Moroccan health authorities have performed 20,175 medical tests on suspected COVID-19 cases that came back negative.
In recent days, the Ministry of Health increased daily tests for COVID-19 and currently tests nearly 2,000 people per day.
The increased test frequency has allowed for the detection of more asymptomatic COVID-19 cases, as well as cases with very mild symptoms, currently representing 79% of patients in Morocco. Approximately 17% suffer from severe symptoms but do not require intensive care, while only 4% of patients are in critical condition.
To adjust to the holy month of Ramadan, which begins in Morocco tomorrow, April 25, the Ministry of Health announced a change in the schedule of the daily press briefings on the COVID-19 situation in the country.
The ministry will start presenting updates at 4 p.m. instead of 6 p.m., while the morning online update will continue to go live at 10 a.m.
