Rabat – Madagascar has expressed support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, recalling UNSC Resolution 2797, which recognizes the Moroccan plan as one of the most feasible political solutions to end the dispute over Western Sahara.
The East African country announced its position following talks between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, and his counterpart Alice N’Diaye on Tuesday in Rabat.
In a joint statement following the talks, Madagascar reiterated its support for the exclusive role of the US as well as efforts of the UN Secretary General and his Personal Envoy to resolve the dispute over the Sahara.
The country’s position aligns with the momentum and growing support Morocco’s Autonomy Plan has been receiving from the international community.
More than 126 countries support the Autonomy Plan as the only or most feasible political solution to end the dispute over Western Sahara.
Several countries have joined the growing chorus recently, including Canada, Japan, and Mali.
Earlier this month, Japan expressed support for the UN-led political process seeking a mutually acceptable solution based on the Moroccan Autonomy Plan.
The Japanese government also welcomed UN Security Council Resolution 2797, declaring that “genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty” is the most workable solution to end the dispute.
In addition, Japan urged all parties to the dispute to participate in talks without preconditions and based on the Moroccan autonomy plan to achieve a definitive and mutually acceptable solution.
Canada made a similar announcement in April, recognizing the Moroccan plan as a credible and serious basis to settle the Sahara dispute.
