Malawi’s Foreign Affairs Minister Eisenhower Nduwa Mkaka affirmed today that his country remains committed to supporting Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.

Mkaka asserted that Malawi and Morocco maintain traditional relations” based on mutual brotherhood.”

Mkaka made the remarks during a press conference in Rabat, during which he announced Malawi’s decision to open a consulate general in Morocco’s Laayoune.

Malawi will officially open the consulate on Thursday.

Mkaka also announced that Malawi will open an embassy in Rabat.

Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita commended Malawi’s decision, noting that both the nations experienced considerable progress in all areas of their relations.

According to Bourita, the Malawi-Morocco progress was a result of Malawi’s decision in 2017 to withdraw recognition of the self-proclaimed SADR.

“Today, there is the high will of King Mohammed VI and President of Malawi Lazarus Chakwera to develop relations in depth and activate bilateral cooperation mechanisms,” the Moroccan FM said.

Bourita further stated that a joint commission has been established between the two countries to promote economic relations, particularly in agricultural fields and the academic sector.

The joint commission is set to take place next year.

Bourita recalled that Morocco and Malawi share the same positions on several issues, including security in sub-Saharan Africa.

“This development of relations with Malawi, is within the framework of the King’s high will to open up to English-speaking African countries, to establish channels of communication with them and to agree on development projects in all fields.”

Mkaka and Bourita also expressed their gratitude and appreciation towards each other for the constant support that both the African nations have provided for one another.

Mkaka praised Morocco for providing medical equipment to a number of African countries as part of the country’s ongoing support to  help countries in the African continent battle COVID-19.

For his part, Bourita thanked Malawi for its firm and constant support of Morocco’s territorial integrity.

Over 20 countries from Africa and other continents opened consulates in Laayoune and Dakhla.

“These states represent all regions of the African continent and Malawi will be the fifth member country of the Southern African Development Community (SADC to open a consulate in the Moroccan Sahara, after the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Zambia, Ewwatini, and Madagascar.”
