Rabat – Recharging stations for Tesla electric vehicles are being installed in various areas throughout the city of Casablanca.

According to reports, Tesla intends to begin operations in Casablanca. A leader in the electric car industry, Tesla is establishing a presence in Morocco.

Tesla’s intention to conquer the Moroccan market has been cemented with the installation of several charging stations for electric vehicles bearing the car manufacturer’s branding.

At this stage, it is unknown whether Tesla will carry out its installation process directly or through a local partner.

Founded in 2003 under the name Tesla Motors, Tesla is a car manufacturer with the desire to create a technology company that transcends beyond the automobile and automotive industries, utilizing technologies such as batteries, computer software and engines to accelerate the shift to sustainability.

Morocco is already on Tesla’s radar, as the US electric car manufacturer subcontracts part of its semiconductor needs to STMicroelectronics in Bouskoura.

Morocco is on the verge of becoming the “most competitive” automotive industry hub, according to US magazine Automotive Industries (AI), a publication dedicated to the automotive industry.

Due to its proximity to Europe and its growing automotive industry, Morocco is attracting more automakers and suppliers to set up shop in the north African country, the US magazine said in a feature on the national automotive sector.

Currently, there are now nearly 250 local suppliers, resulting in a  production capacity of 700,000 vehicles annually. This generates more than 160,000 jobs.

A figure exceeding over 180% of the forecasts, as stipulated in the Industrial Acceleration Plan (PAI) from 2014 to 2019, resulting in 90,000 jobs.

Additionally, the automotive export industry generated a turnover of MAD 80 billion ($ 8.8 billion) in 2019 and MAD 72 billion ($ 8 billion) in 2020 despite the context of the pandemic, or an added value of MAD 31.7 billion ($ 3.5 billion).
