Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Nasser Bourita, held talks on Friday with his Canadian counterpart, Melanie Joly.
Speaking via video conference, the two ministries spoke at length of celebrating the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Canada in 1962.
The commemoration of this occasion will be an opportunity to organize a series of joint events capitalizing on the commercial, human and educational exchanges developed by the two countries, the two officials agreed.
Bourita and Joly further vowed to enhance the already-good relations, notably through exploring possible partnerships in areas of common interest to lift bilateral cooperation toward a rich, solid, and mutually beneficial strategic partnership.
They additionally pledged to collaborate on a unified roadmap this year, which will include the commencement of high-level political dialogues.
Both officials emphasized their countries’ strong commitment to mutual consultation on multilateral concerns, with today’s discussions focusing on regional and international problems.
The policies of the two countries overlap in a number of areas, including peace and security, where they are already committed to working together to fight against terrorism and deliver global stability.
During a visit to Morocco in 2020, then Canadian Foreign Minister François-Philippe Champagne stated that Canada and Morocco are “Afro-optimists.”
Both countries deeply share the deep conviction that despite its numerous current and emerging challenges, Africa has significant assets and represents the future of the world on many fronts.
During his visit, the then Canadian Foreign Minister commended Morocco’s sincere and credible efforts to resolve the Western Sahara conflict.
Champagne reiterated Canada’s commitment to the UN Security Council-led political process to find a compromise-based and lasting solution to the Sahara crisis.
