Rabat – Morocco and Algeria will not be hosting the African Handball Championship in 2022 and 2024. The ban is a result of a decision by the council of the African Handball Confederation, announced in a press release on March 29, 2022.
The 25th edition of the African Men’s Handball Championship was originally scheduled to take place in Morocco from January 13 to 23. Algeria boycotted the cup, therefore, it was postponed to June 2022, then again to July 11.
As a consequence, the council of CAHB made the decision to ban Morocco from organizing the 25th edition of the Men’ Seniors Africa Nations Cup (2022), as well as banning Algeria from organizing the 26th edition of the same event in 2024.
The CAHB stated that it did not like the divide and differences that emanated from both countries. The animosity between Morocco and Algeria shows a lack of sportsmanship from both parties.
The CAHB hopes with this withdrawal that both countries will strive to overcome their problems with one another, and leave them out of sports.
The Confederation states that “the extra-sporting divergences deeply marred the relations between the Royal Moroccan Handball Federation (FRMHB) and the Algerian Handball Federation (FAHB).”
The press release also notes that “despite the efforts deployed to avoid the boycott by certain participating teams, it notes with a deep regret that divergences still persist and are likely to put in danger the good progress of those events.”

Algeria boycotted the 2022 African Men’s Handball Cup because it was going to be held in Morocco’s Western Sahara.
The CAHB has yet to announce who will replace Morocco and Algeria as hosts for the 2022/2024 African Handball Championships.
