Rabat – Indonesia has confirmed today that it will celebrate Eid Al Fitr 2022 on Monday, May 2.
The country’s Minister of Islamic Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas confirmed the news on his Twitter.
“1 Shawaal 1443 falls on Monday, 2 May 2022. This is the result of the moon sighting,” the minister said.
Shawaal is the tenth month in the Islamic calendar, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
“We hope that all Muslims in Indonesia can enjoy Eid together,” the minister added.
This confirmation adds Indonesia to a lengthy list of countries that have announced Monday as Eid Al Fitr.
Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait have all announced they will celebrate Eid Al Fitr on Monday.
Egypt, Algeria, and Tunisia will also celebrate Eid Al Fitr on Monday.
Some other countries, including Oman and Morocco, are expected to sight the crescent moon today, but astronomers have predicted that they will also celebrate Eid Al Fitr on Monday.
Meanwhile, countries such as Niger, Mali, and Afghanistan have declared that the crescent moon was visible on Saturday and announced today as the first day of Eid Al Fitr.
Astronomical calculations also showed that other countries like India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh may announce Tuesday, May 3 as the first day of Eid.
