Rabat – During an appearance on Moroccan TV program “Shahrazad’s World,” former Moroccan athlete Said Aouita accused his ex-wife Khadija Skhir of defrauding him and taking control of all of his money and property.

Aouita explained that Skhir was in charge of managing all of his money and property after he had named her a power of attorney to make financial decisions for him, leaving him vulnerable to scams and financial exploitation. According to him, she took advantage of his trust and took over all of his belongings with the help of the family lawyer.

The ex-couple divorced two years ago, after having been married for 37 years. They have three daughters together, including singer Xena Aouita. “How could you not trust your partner of 37 years?” Aouita said, stressing that she exploited the trust he had in her.

He explained that as he wanted to retire and live comfortably with the hard-earned money and savings he made during his successful sporting career, he was appalled to learn that his ex-wife had taken control over all his money. “I found myself with empty bank accounts, all my land were sold, everything was gone,” he added.

The former runner described his ex-wife’s actions as a “despicable breach of trust,” bemoaning their almost four-decades-old marriage. He said that the main reason for their divorce was her dishonesty.

Aouita refused to provide further details regarding the incident and said that he prefers to keep his personal life private. He has taken legal action in hopes to be served justice.

The video of Aouita recounting the incident prompted widespread debate among Moroccan internet users, with many sympathizing with the Olympic athlete and criticizing the ex-wife’s dishonesty.

Meanwhile, others considered the incident to be “deserved karma” for the Moroccan athlete, recounting what Aouita had done to his own father. In 2019, 85-year-old Ahmed Aouita, the Moroccan athlete’s father, took to local news outlets with shocking statements. He said that his children, including Said, had completely abandoned him for more than 20 years, leaving the elderly man struggling with deteriorating financial conditions and health problems.

Aouita was a middle and long-distance runner who broke many world records. He broke his own record in 1987 for the 5,000 meters race with a time of 12:58:39. He was the first man to run the race in under 13 minutes.
