Rabat – The 2022-2023 academic year in Morocco is set to begin on September 5 for primary, middle, and high schools, according to the Ministry of Education.
The schools’ administrative body will have to resume work on September 1, while teachers are expected to join on the following day. Informal education classes will resume on October 3.
Last year, the school year was postponed by one month due to Morocco’s health crisis, as it experienced a peak in the number of COVID-19-related cases.
For the upcoming academic year, third- year high schoolers pursuing science, technology, applied arts, and economics majors are expected to sit for the baccalaureate exams on June 6-8, while exams for literature-related majors are scheduled for June 9-10.
Retake sessions are scheduled for July 5 to 8.
Last year, the success rate in the regular session for the national baccalaureate exam reached 68.43%, compared to 63,08% in 2020.
The ministry further noted that second-year baccalaureate students in the scientific-based majors will sit for exams on May 31 and June 1, while the literature department will take their exams on June 2 and 3.
Retake sessions for second-year exams are set for July 3 and 4.
According to the school calendar, middle schoolers will have the ninth-grade exams on June 15 and 16, while six-grade students in primary school will sit their final exams on June 20.
On Monday, Morocco’s security services arrested 573 people nationwide for being involved in or associated with cases of fraud during the 2021-2022 baccalaureate exams.
The number of people who sat for baccalaureate exams this year increased by 8% compared to last year.
Morocco postponed in-person classes for almost a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, before reinstating in-person classes in the 2021 academic year.
Concerning Morocco’s 2023 plan to reform education, Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research, and Innovation Abdellatif Miraoui repeatedly said that its ministry will focus on strengthening language learning, promoting digital technology, and teaching skills necessary for the job market.
