Rabat – Morocco’s national football team Manager Walid Regragui is in the run for the 2022 Best Coach award from the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS).
IFFHS announced Regragui’s nomination for the IFFHS Men’s World Best Club Coach 2022 alongside some of the world’s best coaches including Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp. The list includes 15 candidates.
The nomination comes following the coach’s significant achievement this year in the World Cup, as he became the first coach to lead an African or Arab team to the semi-finals.
Regragui was put in charge of the team only three months before the World Cup began. He was praised for his ability to motivate his players, as well as building one of the tournament’s strongest defenses.
Prior to joining the Moroccan football team, the team was led by Bosnian-French coach Vahid Halilhodzic, who was largely blamed for Morocco’s poor performance.
The Bosnian was equally famous for lingering feuds with some of Morocco’s best players including Hakim Ziyech who initially retired from playing with Morocco, and later returned to the team after Regragui became manager.
Following the team’s stellar performance in the FIFA World Cup, Regragui gained much popularity and was welcomed back as a hero, with the Moroccan King Mohammed VI awarding him an Order of the Throne decoration.
In a statement, FIFA said that Regragui was “Morocco’s hero at Qatar 2022,” adding that he executed “an effective game plan,” and got the team’s balance right in a very short period of time.
Regragui “united everyone, brought stability to the dressing room, and repaired the cracks in the team that had formed prior to his arrival,” FIFA added in the same statement.
