Rabat – The head of Morocco’s government on Wednesday said that Morocco “has become a leader in sustainable, economic, and human development,” stressing the country’s commitment and readiness to tackle current global crises, alongside its partners.
Akhannouch made the statement during his speech at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2023. The event is taking place between January 16 and 20 in Davos, Switzerland.
Speaking at the forum, Akhannouch highlighted the urgent need for collective action in the face of the successive crises that have engulfed the world, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, the rise in energy and commodity prices, and global warming.
In light of the current geopolitical context, “Morocco is an ideal partner to build our responses at the economic, political, environmental, and social levels,” Akhannouch stressed, adding that Morocco, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, has become a “regional model” in several domains.
Akhannouch explained that Morocco has built “modern democratic institutions” that have achieved “groundbreaking” change in terms of gender equality, human rights, and advanced regionalization.
He gave the example of Morocco’s 2011 constitution and the reforms of the country’s family code – the Moudawana – which was adopted in 2004.

In addition, the head of the Moroccan government praised Morocco’s response to the COVID-19 outbreak, saying that the country managed to deal with the epidemiological crisis in an “exemplary manner, with one of the lowest mortality rates in the world.”
Empowering and supporting Moroccan youth is also at the heart of Morocco’s reforms, Akhannouch noted. He explained that the country is committed to giving the youth opportunities to enter the job market and “unleash its creative energy through entrepreneurship.”
In this respect, Akhannouch highlighted the project Morocco aims to deploy by 2035, with the aim of “creating a stronger link between economic and social aspects, while consolidating the red thread of ecological transition, which is now required of us all.”
Akhannouch noted that King Mohammed launched a “silent revolution” by implementing the social protection project, offering all Moroccans health coverage and social benefits, a first for an African country.
After highlighting Morocco’s “unique experience” in light of the current socio-economic challenges, Akhannouch concluded his statement by emphasizing Morocco’s “full and complete availability” to play its part in this global mission.
