Rabat – Eid Al-Fitr this year has come with a taste of inflation, with chicken prices significantly increasing to reach MAD 28 per kilogram in certain Moroccan markets.

The cost of the traditional lunch table on the day of Eid, which is usually composed of tajines, pastillas, and grilled chicken, has surged even more as other food products also experience inflated prices.

According to professionals, the new rise in prices can be explained by the soaring costs of food products, as costs to maintain and produce chicken meat continue rising.

Another reason is the rising demand in the face of the limited supply, especially as breeders take advantage of the holiday season to monopolize the market and raise prices.

Demand might have also increased as consumers turn to chicken and other white meats as red meat prices continue their own climb.

This increase in chicken prices has come at a time where inflation has already affected Moroccans’ purchasing power, with all kinds of essential food items being sold at inflated prices.

Traders could also be impacted by the price increase, as they have to buy more expensive chicken when more and more people are refusing to buy it as long as prices do not come down.
