Rabat – Two people lost their lives and five others have been seriously injured following a partial collapse of a textile building located in an industrial zone in Tit Mellil in the Casablanca-Settat region, according to local authorities.
Security authorities and civil protection services moved to the scene immediately upon notification of the incident at 4 a.m., and were able to transfer some of the injured to the Mediouna hospital for first aid and treatment.
Rescue operations have continued to attempt to save three other people still trapped under the rubble.
Local authorities also indicated that an investigation was opened under the supervision of the Public Prosecution to find out the reasons behind the incident.
The incident has put the spotlight back on the presence of buildings very vulnerable to collapsing in Casablanca, as well as issues of workplace safety.
Less than a year ago, three people lost their lives in the city when a house collapsed due to a heavy rain that had hit the region.
Collapsed at 1:30 a.m, the house was on the danger list among other buildings that the local authorities identified as being at risk of collapsing.
This led many residents to demand that local authorities come up with a solution to the recurring phenomenon of building collapses in the city.
The civil protection services retrieved the body of one of the victims from the rubble, while the two other victims passed away at the hospital.
