Rabat – Morocco’s judicial police in Temara, a city near Rabat, arrested three suspects for their alleged involvement in the misappropriation of humanitarian aid meant for the victims of the devastating earthquake that struck Morocco on September 8.
A statement from Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said that the police launched an investigation to uncover the criminal acts attributed to the three suspects, a truck driver, his assistant, and a grocery store owner.
The suspects are facing several charges, including breach of trust, and misappropriation of humanitarian aid.
Police received a report from an activist who suspected the truck driver and his assistant, noting that the goods were “deposited in a commercial store located in the city of Temara.”
The DGSN confiscated the stolen humanitarian aid, while investigations are ongoing to determine all circumstances and details of the case.
Police put the suspects in custody pending trial.
Government agencies, NGOs, and volunteers have been working tirelessly to collect much-needed aid including food, blankets, tents, and clothes for the earthquake victims.
