Rabat – The Moroccan national football team’s unexpected exit from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) at the hands of South Africa last night has left the country and fans disheartened, prompting questions about the future of the team under the guidance of head coach Walid Regragui.
In a press conference held after the 2-0 defeat in the tournament’s Round of 16, Regragui said he plans to meet with the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), Fouzi Lekjaa, to discuss and determine the best course of action for the national team.
He stated that he is not “someone who hides,” acknowledging the inevitable highs and lows in football selections.
Regragui also highlighted the challenges the players faced during yesterday’s match and the overall difficulty of the competition. He also acknowledged their efforts, saying that they “performed to the fullest.”
Despite the disappointment, the coach emphasized the need for collective decision-making after evaluating the team’s performance and considering potential changes.
“Yes we failed, but we will all sit together … we have time right now … and we will make the best decision for Morocco,” he said.
Morocco, considered one of the tournament favorites, faced a disappointing elimination given the high expectations following their impressive performance in recent tournaments, notably reaching the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The defeat against South Africa has raised questions about the team’s readiness for the upcoming challenges, particularly as Morocco is set to host the AFCON in 2025, where they will be aiming for redemption.
The FRMF, along with Regragui, seem keen on further developing Moroccan football, with the recent setback driving discussions about potential changes, both in the coaching staff and player strategies.
Despite the current setback, there remains optimism for the future. The 2025 AFCON could provide an opportunity for a strong comeback that can live up to the expectations of fans.
The country’s hosting of the 2030 World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal will add to the anticipation for the growth and potential success of the Moroccan national team.
